The New York State Lottery officially joined the consortium in May 2002 when the original multi-state game expanded into The Big Game Mega Millions. A standard New York Mega Millions play costs $2.00. Players choose 5 white balls from 1 to 70 and 1 gold Mega Ball from 1 to 24. For an additional $1.00 per play, players can activate the Megaplier add-on. The Megaplier randomly draws a multiplier number (2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x) before every drawing, multiplying all non-jackpot secondary tier prizes. Crucially, the Megaplier boosts the second-tier Match 5 prize from $1,000,000 up to an incredible $5,000,000 in cash! Overall odds of winning any prize tier on a $2 play are an approachable 1 in 24.
100% of net profits generated from Mega Millions ticket sales in New York are constitutionally dedicated to supporting New York Public Elementary and Secondary Education, funding classroom facilities, computer infrastructure, special education, and pupil transportation across all school districts statewide. Prizes over $5,000 are subject to 24% federal tax withholding, 8.82% New York State income tax, and 3.876% New York City tax where applicable.
