The New Jersey Lottery officially joined the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) Powerball matrix in January 2010 under a historic cross-selling agreement that enabled New Jersey players to participate in both national mega-jackpot games (Powerball and Mega Millions). New Jersey is celebrated as one of the most prolific Powerball jackpot states in the nation. In May 2016, a single winning ticket purchased at a 7-Eleven store in Trenton won an extraordinary $429.6 million Powerball jackpot ($284 million cash option). The prize was claimed by the close-knit, eight-member Smith family, who dedicated significant portions of their winnings to community revitalization and charitable foundations in Trenton. Other monumental New Jersey Powerball champions include Pedro Quezada of Passaic, who captured an immense $338 million jackpot in March 2013, and the famous "Ocean's 16" group of Ocean County vehicle maintenance employees who split a $448.4 million jackpot in August 2013, claiming a $149.4 million share.
A standard New Jersey Powerball play costs $2.00, where players select 5 white balls from 1 to 69 and 1 red Powerball from 1 to 26. For an additional $1.00 per play, players can add the Power Play multiplier, which multiplies non-jackpot secondary prizes by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x (the 10x multiplier is active when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less), while automatically doubling the second-tier Match 5 prize to a fixed $2,000,000 in cash. Under the New Jersey Lottery Enterprise Contribution Act, 100% of net lottery proceeds from Powerball ticket sales are dedicated to the New Jersey Public Employee Pension System (Common Pension Fund L), helping guarantee retirement security for teachers, police officers, firefighters, and municipal workers across all 21 counties. In New Jersey, all lottery prizes over $10,000 are subject to mandatory tax withholdings, consisting of 24% federal income tax and 8.0% New Jersey state tax (which rises to 10.75% for prizes exceeding $500,000). Crucially, under New Jersey state law enacted in January 2020 (P.L. 2019, c.390), all lottery winners can remain 100% permanently anonymous to protect their identity and personal privacy.
